Started back in 2001 carrying a Fuji "superzoom" and then jumped over to the
Canon SX-10, SX-20, and now the SX-50. The SX-50 has been easy to carry to
bird festivals and some Central & South American countries. I use the "Vivid"
setting and manipulate passable photos with Photoshop Elements to "sharpen" the
image and adjust light levels for better clarity. I agree that the images out
of the camera are a bit "soft." At maximum zoom the detail gets washed out
easily.
At one point I thought I needed a DSLR and wound up with a Pentax and a 300 mm
lens. After carrying it to Mexico once, I changed my mind. Can only jam so much
in my small backpack. Some folks are good at lugging these beasts around but it
hasn't been worth it for me. I still use it around here for local shots once in
awhile though.
