OBOL, Deschutes and Jefferson County birding by ECAS Wednesday Birders. Hatfield is the name of the wastewater ponds for Bend, so this does not refer to HMSC in Newport. Judy

Hatfield, Lower Bridge and Haystack Res were our destinations today. First pond at Hatfield had 9 American Pipits, some flying around and finally that number landed in front of us. Prairie Falcon made 2 or 3 trips across the pond, but didn't look to be serious about hunting. We did not go to the back pond.

Lower Bridge was nice but we were unable to find any hummers. Three or 4 species of wrens there, as there was debate about whether the calling and unseen bird was a Rock or a Canyon Wren. Cooperative Lincoln's Sparrow was a lifer for one person. Merlin and Northern Harriers gave a good show.

We also had a debate at Haystack, with loons. There were 3 loons. On our first stop we were quite sure one was a Pacific, gray head, smooth rounded head, but unable to clearly see the bill or compare the size of it with any other bird. As we moved about the res trying to find the Red-necked Grebe that Lew found yesterday, we kept finding Common Loons and didn't ever see one again that looked like the Pacific. So I did put both on the list but it should be called "a better view desired".

And Robins and Red-tailed Hawks were present in big numbers everywhere today.

List below will have locations specified for some birds, ie. J for Haystack, since it is in Jefferson county. All the others were in Deschutes county.
