Although Peter Low had the bird with chickadees around the parking lot
late a.m., those of us arriving after noon only saw it around the trees
near the entrance area. You will see tracks in the snow concentrated
where groups of us watched the bird for periods. No telling if behavior
will be similar tomorrow, but this p.m. the best way to find it was by
finding Pygmy Nuthatches. Trees near and on both sides at the entrance
and even occasionally across OB Riley as far as the trees around the
KTVZ building and the sign for the state park office were used. We
watched it successfully obtain an insect from inside a pine cone. It was
mostly in junipers, other trees less.
Spread out and be in touch with each other if anyone finds Pygmy
Nuthatches. Earlier in the afternoon it was with a loose flock of mult
species, juncos, house Funches, etc.. Several times it foraged in a tree
long enough to allow good, almost prolonged looks.
