Upwards of a dozen birders did a three-hour seawatch at Boiler Bay this
morning. Highlights including a steady flow of southbound Red Phalaropes, with
some just off the point. The passage averaged between 50-100 every five
minutes. We saw modest numbers of Northern Fulmars (about ten) and
Sooty/Short-tailed Shearwaters, with 5-8 of each species identified and several
more relegated to the slash category.
The flight of loons was steady at about 50-100 per minute, about 75% Pacifics,
15-20% Commons and the rest Red-throateds.
Southbound ducks included a steady flow of Surf and White-winged Scoters,
several flocks of Lesser Scaup totaling about 240 birds, about 50 Greater
Scaup, plus small groups of N. Pintail, Green-winged Teal, Anerican Wigeon,
Buffleheads and a single Mallard. We had a total of more than 50 Brant.
Two Peregrines were hinting phalaropes. We have river of larger and mid-sized
gulls (mostly California) with modest numbers of Herring, Glaucous-winged and
Mew in the mix and we had one Thayer's. ten Heermann's Gulls passed offshore.
We had a smattering of inshore Bonaparte's Gulls plus a big feeding swarm at
the horizon that appeared to include about 700-800 more Bonies.
Alcids included about a dozen Ancient Murrelets, six Marbled Murrelets, a
Pigeon Guillemot, nine Rhinoceros Auklets and modestnumbrrs of murres.
Among those present were Wayne Hoffman, Hendrik Herlyn, Em Scattaregia,
Christopher Hinkle, Jesse Laney and a group from OSU, plus me and Shawneen
Finnegan.
