Our Western Bluebirds have returned. We live in a suburban neighborhood of
north Eugene. We were very surprised last year when a pair of Western Bluebirds
showed up in our yard and even more surprised that they successfully nested in
a box on our back fence. There is good habitat not far away but I never
expected to see them in a suburban backyard. They have returned this morning
and male and female are both making frequent visits in and out of the same box
they used last year. They left a couple of weeks after 2 young fledgged last
year and we did not see them at all through the winter so it’s very nice to see
them back.
I also yesterday saw my first fully bright yellow American Goldfinch. Near the
rear patio the Black-capped Chickadees are sitting on top of the box they used
last year and the male is frequently singing. The Bewick’s Wren is in full song
all day long. Sprind is here. Unfortunately, our neighbor loves it that she
has birds coming to the first box she has ever put up. I say unfortunately
because they are starlings. As long as they use her box and leave our bluebird
nest alone then it’s ok.
