I haven't followed the thread closely about the Curry mistery migrant, but
saw this species mentioned. I believe there is a small but established
wintering population in California, using ornamental shrubbery in residential
neighborhoods. The species seems to be recorded annually in Oregon spring and
fall. I recall one detected while folks chased the Painted Bunting at Neawanna
Creek a few winters ago. In my youth it was surely considered a true vagrant
here (pre-1970). I suppose the increase in detections may only be a direct
reflection of increased observer effort and greatly improved talent pool in
those observers. Lars
