I can add to Mike Patterson's caution with personal experience from when I was
first began trying to identify birds using a Peterson guide. The closest thing
I could find to the bird in my back yard that resembled it was a Black-chinned
Sparrow. This time of the year male Black-chinned Sparrows lack their black
chin, so if it has black on the throat it most likely is a House Sparrow.
