The five mile radius craze reminded me of a fun challenge Adrian and I came
up with years ago: the Big Minute.
Our record is 30 species in sixty seconds at Benson Pond. At Fern Ridge a
couple falls ago I was pretty sure I could have hit 40, but I didn’t have
the time (seems counterintuitive, but the strategy is to keep doing big
minutes until you have all the species staked out and everything lines up
just right).
Oregon, and North America in general, hosts especially abundant and visible
afauna which makes for productive big-minuteing.
Anyone have other fun challenges to try in 2019?
