This is the list I've kept since 2013. I live in a neighborhood just south
of the Oregon State Fairgrounds, a neighborhood developed 60 years ago.
Habitat: Diciduous trees primarily with some scattered evergreens. Open
fields (State Fair parking) nearby. Elevation 146'. Feeding black oil seed,
suet & water. There are 5, 40' columnar maple trees in the backyard and two
long banks of snowberries for cover.
I have an idea the tall trees represent a safe "island' for flying birds
and act as an attractant. New birds use the trees like a staircase down to
water, where they also discover the feed.
It's possible the reflection from the birdbath also draws them. The
regulars of course just swoop in because they know the table is always set
and safe.
The less common birds on the list have a date when I first saw and
identified them. A few have only the year. A couple, no date, just seen &
ID'd. I didn't understand the usefulness of noting the full date, and maybe
the time of day. –Jon

Great Blue Heron - 3/25/14
Backstory: This bird landed in the top of a tree in a neighbor's yard. It
surprised the heck out of me. I saw it once again afew days later swooping
over the backyard.
I later met a gentleman on another street in the neighborhood. He had been
hand digging a small pond for his front yard, but on this day he was
filling it in.
I stopped and we visited. He said "a heron cleaned out' his backyard Koy
pond. He had given them ledges and rocks to hide under. He tried heavy
netting over the pond. It didn't matter. He said some of the Koy were a
foot long. ///
