Early mornings on foot around Ankeny last week turned up all the usual
suspects: highlights included a massive swarm of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS on
April 20; I did not take time to sort through them because they were so
numerous that doing so would have killed off half my morning, but a gorgeous
Myrtle form landed briefly right in front of my camera lens. Photo at
http://www.birdingoregon.com/sightings.html.
They were not nearly so abundant, but numerous nonetheless, on subsequent days.
Other Highlights were a prime BLUE-WINGED TEAL all by himself to make for the
unlikely teal trifecta, a LESSER YELLOWLEGS to go along with several GREATER
Y-L, several small flocks of LEAST SANDPIPERS, several WILSON'S SNIPE, a flock
of 30 GWF GEESE, an AMERICAN BITTERN I almost stepped on, and adult
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, a prime WHITE-THROATED SPARROW (seems late but he was with
a flock of GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS so maybe they will all head north together
soon), and a hen WOOD DUCK paired up with a drake MALLARD (I wonder how that
will work out). Also found a little poser male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD; photos of
him here http://www.birdingoregon.com/field-notes.html. --John Shewey
