Ankeny, of course, not Ankeney ... and I typed it twice! Sorry, bad case of State Bird fever ... __________________________ Hendrik G. Herlyn Corvallis, OR "Nature is not a place to visit. We arrived around 11 am and heard the unmistakable, loud "chip" a soon as we got out of the car. About 20 birders from all over where already gathered at the overlook, and we all enjoyed great looks at the warbler in the pines before it flew off to the yards NE of the road. After seeing the warbler, we spent a little time birding the rest of the refuge. Highlights included 15 SNOW GEESE and a few CANVASBACKS on Eagle Marsh, and a female EURASIAN WIGEON and a "stripe-less" male GREEN-WINGED TEAL on Pintail Marsh. The latter was clearly lacking the vertical breast stripe of an American Green-winged Teal, but we also failed to detect any hint of the lateral stripe usually found in the Eurasian subspecies ("Common Teal"). Unfortunately, the bird mostly stayed hidden behind some tall grass and we never had a chance to get a closer look to see if a lateral stripe was actually present (and partially hidden), or if it was truly absent. A great day to be out, and the weather was very cooperative. Happy birding Hendrik __________________________ Hendrik G. Herlyn Corvallis, OR "Nature is not a place to visit.
