Hi Mike, I'm wondering what your thoughts are about this bird. Head shape and bill profile seem to fit Barrow's. Given the amount of white on the breast and the contrast between the slightly darker back panel and the paler flanks, I'd say this is a young male. Sibley shows first-winter males with emerging white facial spots and yellow eyes, but then his text says "variable". It may that one of the variable factors is whether they have a white spot or not, but eye color normally changes over from dark to yellow pretty quickly in young birds. I'm much too tired to go plowing into the descriptions in Birds of North America Online tonight, so that will have to wait until tomorrow.
