Today a number of birders relocated the American Tree Sparrow found earlier by
John Sullivan. It was found in two different locations. When I arrived, it
was in the area south of Royal Avenue in small trees and brush between Royal
Avenue itself and the alternate path a short distance south leading to the
observation platform. Later, I found it calling along the north-south portion
of the path to the observation platform, on the east side of the path and not
far from the platform.
If you plan to look for this bird, be sure you are familiar with its calls.
They are distinctive - and loud enough to get your attention immediately.
A White-tailed Kite was in the distant part of the field far to the northeast
of the Royal Avenue parking lot. At first it was in a tree along the far edge
of the field. I saw it because it was making an attempt to land in some
scraggly tree branches and was creating quite a commotion. Once perched, it
was less easy to see because its white plumage blended in with the cloudy sky
behind the trees. Darker parts blended in withe tree branches. It would have
been easy to miss from another point in the parking lot because the brushy
island on the north side of the field just to the east of the parking lot is an
effective screen. When looking for this bird, try not to miss any segment of
possible perches.
After I left the parking lot, I saw the kite flying in to a perch at the corner
or the far side of the field to the north of Royal Avenue where the driveway
leading to private residences and Redhead Pond is located. There is a small
house on the north side of Royal Avenue near this location.
