My wife told me that an American Robin was building a nest on top of a nest box I have mounted on a grape arbor support post. What's interesting is that there is a family of Chestnut-backed Chickadees in the nest box right now. The parents are flying back and forth bringing food to their babies. Talk about birds tolerating each other!! The American Robin was fun to watch bringing mouthfuls of mud and sticks to the nest. It would put the material in the center of the nest and then lay on top of the opening moving in a circular pattern and packing the materials down with it's stomach and chest. We have several nest boxes and also have White-breasted Nuthatches and Black-capped Chickadees nesting now. A few weeks ago we had a Western Screech Owl occupy a wood duck nest box for four to five weeks. We saw it almost daily and suspect it had babies that might have fledged at night. Click on link below to see a few photos. Quality not great, it was raining and dark clouds when the photos were taken yesterday. I live in the Macleay area east of Salem on a small wooded acreage. I will try to post more photos later once the Robin lays it's eggs and hatches It's young.. Happy Birding, Jim Leonard. https://plus.google.com/photos/108302360004365615395/albums/6011975818839768033?authkey=CJLS-Lbk3eDwuwE
