The species is an overwintering bird in much of Oregon's
lowlands. I saw at least a dozen at the mouth of Hood
River yesterday. Their winter plumage and quiet demeanor
means they are easily overlooked. It seems that Lesser
Goldfinch have become the more abundant of the two in
winter in much of the Willamette Lowlands. But they also
remain brighter colored and more vocal in winter. I've
always considered American Goldfinch a good bird when
Christmas counting. Probably only record them 40% of the
time in whatever sector I'm covering, coast or valley.
