Hello, all.
I led a field trip for the Audubon Society of Portland today, May 7, to
Larch Mt., in eastern Multnomah County. Most surprising to me was that the
upper gate is still closed and locked.
Today we had a number of FOY birds. 3 male Black-headed Grosbeaks were
singing at the Women's Forum Viewpoint above Corbett. On Larch Mt Road and
a couple of spur roads, we had multiple House Wrens, MacGillivray's
Warblers, Hermit Warblers, Pacific-slope Flycatchers a Western Wood-Pewee
(well-seen and heard), and a Western Tanager. I tried unsuccessfully to
turn our only hummingbird into something other than a female or juvenile
Anna's. We did hear a Gray Jay, but it apparently decided we were less
interesting than some excited ravens.
A Sharp-shinned Hawk flew across Graham Rd, escorting us back to our
vehicles at the Troutdale Outlet Mall. Beautiful day, fun birding.
