Hi all,
I set up my own 5-mile-radius patch sometime last year. Compared to some of
the coastal patches, mine isn't terribly exciting, but it still encompasses
a nice selection of habitats. Centered on Witham Hill in Corvallis, it does
include pretty much all of Corvallis (including Bald Hill, Fitton Green,
Willamette Park, and Avery Park), most of McDonald Forest, Kiger Island,
Herbert Natural Area (yay!), the Philomath Sewage Ponds (big bonus!), and
most of Philomath town.
My 5MR life list currently stands at 255 species; for 2019, I am at 74
species. I agree that this is a fun birding exercise that concentrates my
efforts closer to home and gives me an excuse to beat some of the local
patches.
