Hi all, Today I surveyed a route with 17 points in the Creswell area that have historically had Vesper Sparrows. I got skunked at all 17 points, the same result as when I surveyed the same points in May. However, after finishing the route I checked Sher Khan Rd. (a few miles west of Creswell, off Camas Swale Rd.). I had also checked this in May but came up dry. Today I heard 3 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS singing in the big pasture on the west side of the road, north of the creek (which had a couple of YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS calling). They were singing out in the grass 50-80 m from the road. I also heard a *very* distant VESPER SPARROW, singing on a pastured hillside with a few large oaks, off to the northwest. A WESTERN MEADOWLARK pair was also using the big pasture on the west side of the road, a WESTERN KINGBIRD pair was chattering away on the power transmission tower way out to the west, and an AMERICAN KESTREL was hanging around the cattle pens. So this was a nice end to an otherwise rather discouraging morning of grassland bird surveys. Happy birding, Joel -- Joel Geier Camp Adair area north of Corvallis OBOL archives: www.freelists.org/archive/obol Manage your account or unsubscribe: //www.freelists.org/list/obol Contact moderators: obol-moderators@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
