We too looked at options other than going with Panasonic, and we found that the additional upfront costs of the Toughbook were worth the investment as the units just seem to run. We have them pretty beat on over the years and they just keep running. I think you will find similar stories from other Law Enforcement agencies. We had hoped the larger screen would help, but it ended up being a safety issue as our deputies would have to close the screen to see out their passenger side mirror. This proved the low quality as all the units had touchscreen failures at the hinge (breaking the connection between the screen and motherboard). We also had issues with the dock Dell sold us, it would not stay powered on, and if you didn't LOCK the dock the power button was VERY sensitive to bumps in the road. Our Panasonic Toughbooks have had touch screen failures and driver issues with Windows 7, but the failures are 2-3 years into use, not 1 month or less. The cost savings with the Dell XFR set us back 2 years, so it hurt pretty bad. You can save money on the Toughbooks by only getting a 1 year warranty (or 90 day if available), or by getting refurbished units from ruggeddepot.com, then if there is a problem you can pay for repairs case by case. We have purchased a couple dozen units from RuggedDepot.com and have been very pleased with them. We have talked about Tablets (iPads or something more rugged) but we don't currently have support for our applications for this platform so we have not tested them in a patrol environment. Does anybody have a success story using a different vendor for mobile units in patrol/police cars?
