The Brooklyn Hospital Center, Brooklyn’s oldest hospital, is a member of the 
Mount Sinai Healthcare System. A prestigious teaching hospital that is 
dedicated to providing outstanding acute care in a state-of-the-art delivery 
environment, located in Downtown Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Hospital Center has a 
large medical residency/fellowship program in many modalities including 
Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Surgery, Family Medicine, OB/GYN, 
Dentistry/OMS, Hematology/Oncology, Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics/Neonatology, 
Cardiology and Pulmonology, to name a few.

The hospital has a strong affiliation, with neighboring Long Island 
University’s Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. 
This affiliation includes in-house faculty members who precept students from 
the college participating in all aspects of care through required and elective 
clerkship experiences. A teaching Certificate is also incorporated into the 
residency curriculum.

The Department of Pharmacy is a dynamic department with a progressive clinical 
focus. The 400 bed facility is staffed by sixteen pharmacists, eight pharmacy 
residents, six interns, seven pharmacotherapy specialists/clinical pharmacy 
coordinators, three clinical pharmacy educators, technicians, messengers, and a 
dedicated management team, the department participates in all aspects of 
medication safety and dispensing using state of the art electronic medical 
records, CPOE, and other clinical software. Dispensing services are achieved 
with a balance of professional, technical, and automated services, including a 
complete intravenous admixture service, TPN compounder, and robotics. 
Clinically, the department maintains around-the-clock drug information and 
consultative services, including: pharmacokinetic dosing, nutrition support, 
collaborative drug therapy ambulatory care clinics, IV to PO substitution, 
automatic therapeutic substitution under protocol, antimicrobial stewardship 
program and response to all cardiac arrest calls.
Currently the Pharmacy Residency Program consists of five PGY-1 residents, a 
PGY-2 resident in Infectious Diseases, and two PGY-2 residents in Ambulatory 
Care.

The Critical Care Pharmacy Resident (PGY-2) will have significant            
exposure to both intensive care              and emergency medicine services. 
The following rotations are available in addition to longitudinal experiences 
in academia, emergency department staffing, nutrition and toxicology consult 
services, critical care practice management and the pharmacotherapist on-call 
program: neonatal/ pediatric intensive care, infectious diseases, pulmonary 
intermediate care, cardiology, transitions of care.
The resident will be on-call for 24 hours approximately once every two weeks 
and will be required to staff in the Emergency Department every other Saturday 
for 12 hours.
The resident will also design and implement a research project to improve the 
quality of ICU care during the one-year program. The design of this project and 
the results         will be presented at major clinical meetings, locally and 
nationally.
Residents are eligible to receive a competitive salary and benefits package, 
including vacation leave, sick leave, medical and dental insurance and a travel 
allowance for professional meetings.

Applicants must be graduates of an ASHP accredited PGY-1 program and should 
indicate, in a letter of intent,  their preference for the          Critical 
Care Pharmacy residency. An official transcript from an accredited college of 
pharmacy                and three letters of reference are also required        
       as part of the application process. At least two letters                
must be from a PGY1 preceptor                and/or  Residency Program 
Director. Applications will be reviewed for academic excellence, professional 
motivation  as demonstrated through            service to the pharmacy 
community, leadership skills and communication skills. Applicants deemed to 
have potential as      residents will be invited              for an interview.
