Hi fellow translators:
Hope you have a wonderful Valentine's Day (lots of chocolate for many of you, I hope). I'm working on adding translator comments to translatable strings in NVDA source code. The current source code indicates that close to half of the messages have associated translator comments - a helpful or clarification message to assist translators when translating messages. This is the solution for trac ticket 1410, which can be found at:
www.nvda-project.org/ticket/1410
Currently I'm using a branch of main code on my computer to add translator comments. So far, about 70% of messages have translator comments. Apart from some difficulties, the process is going well. The new comments, which were not merged into main branch yet, comes from NVDA Preferences dialog, messages related to AppModules, control types and some NVDA interface messages. Of the remaining messages, these will have comments later. The remaining messages (about 400 or so) are categorized into the following categories (in importance, priority and difficulty in adding messages): * Messages heard in input help mode: Some AppModule strings gave me an idea to add the following comments for input help messages: Translators: A message heard during input help mode describing actions for a command. There are around a hundred (or less). These will be done first, as I may need to customize some messages to fit certain contexts, as some commands are only valid in certain situations (for example, long description command). * Control types: Most of the control types now have translator comments (at least at my end). The remaining ones may require that I read more about them on the web and describe it in short detail in the comments (by the way, some of the new strings have example output). I'm waiting for 2013.1 to go live before working on them (as I'm a student in college). * Multiple messages on a single line: In this case, I'm waiting for words from NVDA devs (Mesar included) to work something out for these ones. Once they're ready, these will also have translator comments. * Exceptional cases: One such case is the message "display" found in app module for Windows calculator. These ones may require testing the actual app module and looking at surrounding code to try to come up with useful comment. These will be done last. As the comments in ticket 1410 states, I plan to make this a gradual process (I have submitted new strings to devs for code review in the future).
Thanks.
Cheers,
Joseph
