To Honor King, Howard, Alphas and Arbor Foundation Plant Memorial Tree
WASHINGTON (Aug. 18) - To commemorate the unveiling of the Rev. Martin Luther
King, Jr. Memorial in the nation's capital, Howard University, the Arbor Day
Foundation and King's fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc., will be holding a tree
planting event from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 25, on Howard
University's campus.

The event, "A Tribute to King's Dream: Environmental Justice and
Environmentalism in the 21st century," is a partnership between the
fraternity's Alpha Goes Green Initiative, the Arbor Day Foundation's Tree
Campus USA, and Howard's Office of Sustainability.

Prior to the planting, a program will be held on the importance of
sustainability and protecting the environment in Blackburn Center. Included on
the program are Howard President Sidney A. Ribeau and representatives from the
Alpha Phi Alpha, the Arbor Day Foundation, Toyota Financial Services and
Howard's Office of Sustainability.

The ceremony will conclude with the planting of a southern magnolia tree on the
lawn between Carnegie Hall and Howard Place. Native to the southeastern United
States, the magnolia is a striking evergreen tree with large, dark green leaves
and fragrant white flowers that typically grow up to 90 feet tall.

The Howard University community and Washington-area residents are invited to
attend, "We are excited to partner with Alpha Phi Alpha to encourage campus
chapters to adopt environmentally sustainable practices," said John Rosenow,
chief executive and founder of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Participation in the
Arbor Day Foundation's Tree Campus USA program is a great way for these
chapters to further the important work of planting and caring for campus and
community trees. The efforts provide environmental and social benefits to this
and future generations.

Alfonzye Chisholm, director of the Office of Sustainability, said the planting
is part of the University's effort to become a leader in sustainability among
educational institutions.

"Howard shares the commitment of Alpha Phi Alpha and The Arbor Day Foundation
to protect the earth's resources and have positive impact on climate change,"
Chisholm said. "The MLK "Dream Tree" is the first tree planted on campus under
the Tree Campus USA program and symbolizes our unified commitment to address
this issue"

The fraternity said their effort is instrumental in keeping King's dream of a
cleaner and healthier environment alive, especially in disadvantaged
communities. Starting with Howard's campus, the Alpha Goes Green initiate will
educate communities on the importance of environmental sustainability through
simple yet effective green methods.
