Information on the NASA SISTER Program –
Summer Institute in Science, Technology, Engineering and Research Program 
(SISTER)

The Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland is o­ffering a 1 week 
day Summer Institute for middle school girls. The goal of the program is to 
increase awareness and provide students’ with STEM learning opportunities which 
explore non-traditional career ‑fields with research scientists, mathematicians 
and engineers.

ABOUT SISTER
Program information
The SISTER program is designed to increase awareness of and provide an 
opportunity for female middle school students to be exposed to and explore 
nontraditional career fields with GSFC women engineers, mathematicians, 
scientists, technicians and researchers. The objectives of the program include 
introducing young women to a technical working environment; acquainting 
students with GSFC missions; providing an awareness of educational programs and 
internships available during high school, undergraduate and graduate study; 
providing observations and experiences with real hands-on projects researched 
and developed by women at GSFC. The SISTER program components include such 
activities as women scientist, engineers, technicians, researchers, and 
mathematicians as mentors; women speakers in various fields at GSFC; women 
entrepreneur role models; multicultural experiences; a tour of facilities; 
building and launching rockets; hands-on science experiments; and written 
communication experiences; and interpersonal and human relations skills 
building.

The program takes place for one week each year during the Summer, July 13-17, 
2015, Monday-Friday from 8:30am to 4:00pm at GSFC. It is sponsored by the Equal 
Opportunity Programs Office and The Education Programs Office.

Application information
SISTER PROGRAM: July 13-17, 2015
Thank you for your interest in the Summer Institute in Science, Technology, 
Engineering and Research Program (SISTER). Applications for the 2015 SISTER 
program will be available in March. Please check Back for updates.  The 
application deadline is May 4, 2015 at midnight EST.
Things to keep in mind as you complete the Summer Institute in Science, 
Technology, Engineering and Research application.
1.     Fill out and print an application.
2.     As part of your application, you will write one essay..
3.     Ensure you have your recommendation letter written by a Science, 
Technology, or Math Educator from your school and a copy of your latest report 
card.  The recommendation letter and report card must be submitted with your 
application by May 4, 2015 at midnight EST.
4.     Once your application has been uploaded and submitted, you will receive 
a confirmation email.  If you do not receive the email please email 
GSFC-SISTER@xxxxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:GSFC-SISTER@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>.
5.     Please do not apply to the SISTER Program if you have already had the 
opportunity to experience the one week program before, as this program is a 
one-time experience for middle school girls.
