January 2012 Edition

Happy new year! College and graduate school admissions may look like a very
set, predictable process to outsiders. In reality, however, admissions are
almost always going through some kind of change. Our network of consultants,
clients, and 'alumni' helps to keep us informed of news and trends that can
affect a client's admissions chances.

In college admissions, the big news continuing to dominate the headlines is all
about financial aid and the cost of college today. Schools are reporting record
increases in applications as students apply across the board, many looking to
nab even scarcer financial aid.

In news closer to home, a number of our consultants are still working at their
full client capacities following a busy fall. (We observe these limits because
we are committed to honoring our promise of a maximum 72-hour turnaround time
on client feedback. That means that even our full-time consultants work with a
relatively small number of applicants at any one time.) But, of course,
whatever goes up must also come down, and consultants will become available
again as they complete their work with individual clients. Call us at
703.242.5885 to learn what our consultants can offer you and their availability.

Look through this month's Insider Edge and see what information is of interest
to you. If you don't find what you're looking for, by all means contact
us</mc/compose?to=info@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>. We'll be happy to try to
help you - after all, our favorite activity is helping applicants gain
admission to the schools and programs of their choice.

Hi David,

I'm a 27 yr Indian male and just got a GMAT score of 720.

I have 4 years spent with one of India's top companies under their fast track
program for managers and I gained experience in Strategy and Business
Development. For more than a year now I've been with a Fortune Top 10 company
in India working with their outsourcing department.

I'm looking at doing an MBA from a top tier B school, US/INSEAD/LBS. Can you
advise me on my chances?

Thanks for your help.

Taking a "gap year" between high school and college to travel and explore
potential interests is a popular option that is gaining increased acceptance in
the US. You should not fear that a gap year will be judged harshly by the
colleges and universities to which you apply, provided that you have valid
goals and reasons for doing so, and can demonstrate the value of the time you
spent. Well-structured gap years are educational experiences...

According to a recent New York Times article, thank-you notes have become a new
frontier in the admissions process. Stories abound lately of prospective
students sending not just a standard 'thank you' message, but that of kitsch -
M & Ms in school colors with a quirky message, eye-catching stationary, and
even ones from parents of the applicant.

Hi,

I might be freaking out, but I just realized that I misused the word master in
my statement of purpose. I wrote Masters and masters instead of Master and
master's. Should I not worry or should I attempt to resubmit my statements?

Thank you.

The ABA has approved rather sweeping changes to the information law schools are
currently required to collect regarding their graduates' job placements. The
biggest change is reporting information at the individual level which makes it
auditable for the first time ever. The schools will also have to report if the
graduates are in positions funded by the school and if the positions require
the graduate pass the bar, i.e. was the J.D. degree truly a job requirement.

Many medical school candidates worry about the questions that they may face

There is almost an algorithm to life as a pre-med. Students juggle their
courses, their activities, and when the time comes, they build a resume and
apply to medical school. Then invitations to interview come and suddenly the
prospect of medical school is within reach. The last task is to prepare for the
interview, but this is where the well-defined algorithm finishes.

[http://www.sxc.hu/pic/m/l/lu/lusi/1123481_empty_cards_2.jpg]This year,
University of Michigan has gone beyond simply setting up Twitter and Facebook
accounts for admitted applicants. They are actually hand delivering acceptance
letters to at least some of their admitted applicants in specific geographic
regions.

Traditionally, medical schools have been amongst the least innovative
professional graduate schools. Perhaps this will signal a change to that!

Hello,
I am an junior pre-med student at Drexel and I have a gpa of 2.5 at the moment.
I go on co-op this spring for 6 months, so that leaves me with 4 terms to bring
up my gpa until I graduate. I'm worried that I may only be able to graduate
with barely a 3.0. Any advice on what I can do? Are there any
Post-Baccalaureate programs that are not too expensive that I can take a look
at?
