This individual will work to raise our profile in the STEM communities and to raise our profile in the education community about our work in the STEM fields, including the significant impact our STEM corps members have on student achievement. This person will serve as the organization's STEM point-person, developing resources about the initiative for external audiences that accurately reflect our work. S/he will work with other leaders in the STEM world to ensure that we are benefitting from the latest thinking on advancing the STEM achievement of students in low-income communities, and garnering the support of the key constituents in the STEM world, such as foundations and corporations. In addition, s/he will develop relationships with STEM professional organizations, and with selected graduate programs and employers and will build and develop a STEM advisory board to provide focused guidance and cultivate strong allies in the field of STEM education. The managing director will also work on projects involving other teams within Teach For America, including Teacher Support and Development, Recruitment, Development, Alumni Affairs, Regional Teams, Marketing, and Admissions. The managing director of the math and science initiative reports directly to the vice president, strategy and operations on public affairs. Team Overview The Public Affairs team manages Teach For America's government affairs, research, policy, legal affairs, faith community and nonprofit community relationships. The team works to build support across these communities for Teach For America's ongoing efforts, ensuring that our external reputation accurately reflects our programmatic and organizational strength and quality. Responsibilities Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: * Increasing knowledge of, and generating support for and interest in Teach For America's math and science initiative among federal policymakers, think tanks, and other policy audiences * Ensuring that we are maximizing our presence and impact in the STEM areas by engaging with the external STEM community and supporting other teams at TFA that engage in this work * Building and managing a STEM advisory board to inform our efforts * Working with the development team to identify and pursue funding opportunities for our STEM initiative * Representing Teach For America's math and science initiative at conferences, on panels, and seeking out opportunities to discuss the initiative * Developing relationships with national math, science and engineering organizations and strategically leveraging the support of their education committees * Overseeing and expanding Teach For America's participation in national content-relevant conferences and career fairs Qualifications Candidate Profile and Experience Prerequisites * Bachelors degree required * 5+ years of professional work experience * PhD preferred * Exceptional leadership and relationship-building skills * Exceptional strategic thinking skills * Strong written and oral communication skills * Ability to deeply understand, communicate and represent Teach For America's mission, theory of change and commitment to recruiting corps members with math, science and engineering backgrounds * Ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial environment and deliver measurable results * Some travel required Benefits and Salary Salary for this position is competitive and depends on prior experience.
