APPLICATION DEADLINES Round 1 - February 1, 2012 and Round 2 - March 6, 2012 Houston Leadership For Tomorrow (formerly MLT-Houston) – the Houston metro area’s premier high school leadership development program – is now accepting applications for the HLT Class of 2013 from high-achieving African American, Hispanic and Native American juniors. Applicants are encouraged to start early so there will be adequate time to submit a complete application online at www.houstonleaders.org<http://www.houstonleaders.org/>. The program is free of charge, but does require a commitment to full participation. The cornerstone of the HLT program is the HLT Leadership Summit that includes skill-building workshops, seminars and learning journeys. HLT Emerging Leaders learn about Houston’s challenges and opportunities from prominent business and civic leaders , explore career opportunities, and build a high-performing peer network. The Leadership Summit is held over the course of two weeks in June during which participants live on a college campus. It is an interactive, problem solving-oriented learning experience that opens participants’ eyes to the skills effective leaders need, as well as to their own strengths, weaknesses and potential in a way that many have said is life-changing. Entry into HLT alumni network begins at the end of the school year and expands the opportunity to build relationships with other HLT alums who share an interest in becoming a leader in Houston. TOP TIER COLLEGE ATTENDANCE HLT provides a unique leadership development experience that gives participants from greater Houston’s private, charter and public schools an edge in college and beyond. Participants ̶ known as HLT Emerging Leaders ̶ become part of an elite cohort of future leaders. In addition to leadership skills, HLT focuses on the best educational route to fulfill leadership aspirations, as well as financial aid strategies and a record 54% of the HLT Class of 2011 is currently attending top-tier universities. Nearly half of HLT Alumni have been admitted to top-tier colleges and universities including Harvard, Yale Stanford, Columbia, and New York University along with Rice and the University of Texas. WHO SHOULD APPLY TO HLT? The HLT Emerging Leaders share similar characteristics. They are African American, Hispanic and Native American juniors from the Greater Houston area school and most have a GPA of at least 3.5. (Students with lower academic credentials are accepted based on an essay describing why their past academic record is not indicative of future success.) They have demonstrated leadership potential by academic, community, church, employment and/or athletic activities and awards and honors. They would like to attend a selective college or university, can be a strong contributor in a group of Houston’s best and brightest students and would like to be a leader in Houston at some point in their career.
