The evening will begin with a special VIP reception in the lobby at 5:30 pm; the show will be held from 7-8:30 pm. The event is made possible by an in-kind donation by The Philadelphia Theater Company. The evening will feature incredible live performances by the Philly Youth Slam Team, who beat 50 other youth poetry teams in Brave New Voices to become the #1 youth poetry slam team in the world. Guests will also experience live performances by other PYPM youth poets, learn more about PYPM's work and impact on Philadelphia, and future plans. Mayor Michael Nutter, who supported PYPM on the Brave New Voices trip on behalf of the City of Philadelphia, will also be in attendance to speak. The Philly Youth Poetry Movement was established in 2006 at a time when there were no performance spaces dedicated to local youth poets. Over the past five years, PYPM has grown into the one of the most respected youth poetry organizations in the country, and remains the first and only organization of its kind serving Pennsylvania. PYPM is also a member of the New Beginnings Nonprofit Incubator program at Resources for Human Development (RHD). PYPM accomplishments include: * Knight Arts Challenge winner, awarded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, with a $40,000 matching grant to build a permanent community arts space for PYPM that will be a safe haven for creative expression, and expanded literary arts-based programming for Philadelphia teens throughout the year. * Won the Brave New Voices Championship in 2007, and was featured in 2008 on HBO as part of Russell Simmons Presents Brave New Voices, which documented the festival. * Averaged 30 teens per free poetry workshop since 2010, and more than 100 youths at each monthly poetry competition. In the past month alone, PYPM has averaged 45-50 youths at each workshop. * Launched the PYPM Slam League, in 2011, where Philadelphia area high school poetry teams compete. Participating schools have tripled from six to 18 teams for the 2012 season. * Collaborated with the Mayor's Office to hold the first ever "Youth Poetry Night" at City Hall in 2010. The event was held again in July 2011. * In 2011, 100 percent of seniors participating in PYPM graduated high school and currently attend four-year colleges including Columbia University, Morehouse College, and Temple University. * PYPM alumni have gone on to build award-winning careers, like Joshua Bennett, who performed at the White House for President Obama. The special celebration event on Oct. 24 will honor these accomplishments and showcase the incredible talent of Philadelphia youth poets dedicated to transforming themselves and their communities through spoken word.
