The person in this position is closely familiar with the research agendas of the Center, monitors existing programs and offers insights for innovating and expanding the work. The senior manager, strategic planning (senior manager), works with research directors and the executive team to help shape new and continuing work and to describe the current and proposed agendas in compelling narrative form. Working closely with colleagues within the Pew Research Center and at The Pew Charitable Trusts, the senior manager supports the president by ensuring clear lines of communication between parent and subsidiary and, as necessary, among various units within each. Working closely with the vice president, the senior manager also helps to ensure excellent communication with the Pew Research Center board of directors. Duties include writing and coordinating the preparation of annual plans and grant proposals to The Pew Charitable Trusts Executive Office and, ultimately, Pew's board of directors, as well as with potential outside partners. This position requires outstanding communication skills along with a high degree of diplomacy and interpersonal and organizational skills, initiative, self-motivation, sound judgment, discretion, respect for confidentiality, the ability to remain calm in a high-energy fast-paced environment, a commitment to professionalism and a sincere interest in the work of Pew Research Center. Primary Responsibilities Support Strategic and Institutional Planning § Work closely with the president and senior staff of the Pew Research Center as part of the team developing the research agendas for the organization, helping to set priorities in all aspects of the Pew Research Center's research and operations, particularly related to developing annual plans and grant narratives. § Assist teams in the creation of project strategies, serving as sounding board, strategist, probing questioner and problem solver. § Monitor existing programs and prepare oral and written summaries of activities for the executive team as well as documents for the Pew Research Center board of directors, The Pew Charitable Trusts Executive Office and board of directors. Identify organizational and project issues that should be addressed, propose solutions and carry them out at the direction of the executive team. § Coordinate the annual report to the board of The Pew Charitable Trusts, which describes the Pew Research Center's progress and defines the organization's programmatic and operational goals. Coordinate the Pew Research Center's Annual Grant Request to The Pew Charitable Trusts § Take the lead in preparing the annual grant proposals and ad-hoc funding requests to The Pew Charitable Trusts. Working closely with the president, develop and manage the internal process for determining the contents of the grant request. § Tap research directors to provide descriptions of the proposed work. Serve as the primary author of the grant write-up, focusing on the articulation of clear and compelling descriptions of the Pew Research Center's work and anticipated deliverables. Ensure the high quality of all grant-related documents as well as efficient and thorough follow-up to requests for additional information. § Partner with the director of financial administration and administrative manager in vice president's office to ensure project budgets are aligned with priorities. Manage a complex flow of communications between the Pew Research Center and units of The Pew Charitable Trusts, including the Executive Office, Philanthropic Partnership Group and Communications Staff § Assist the president in proactive communications with The Pew Charitable Trusts' Executive Office, preparing memos and written materials in advance of regular meetings to inform discussions. § Coordinate responses to inquiries from the Executive Office, enlisting the assistance of senior staff such as the communications director when appropriate. § Provide quality control for written communications between the Pew Research Center and The Pew Charitable Trusts. § Under direction of the president, ensure the completion of Executive Office tasks assigned in the organization's relationship management system, Sales force. § Working closely with the vice president, reach out to colleagues at The Pew Charitable Trusts to explore opportunities for sharing information and learning from each other's work. § Ensure that requests for information from The Pew Charitable Trusts offices listed above are answered promptly by working closely with the director of development and the director of communications. Support Pew Research Center's Fundraising Efforts § Work closely with Pew Research Center executive team leadership and The Pew Charitable Trusts' Philanthropic Partnership Group unit to help identify promising opportunities for outside support, both for extending the Pew Research Center's existing work and any new initiatives that it considers launching. § Work with research directors and senior staff as part of team developing proposals and budgets with colleagues from The Pew Charitable Trusts' Philanthropic Partnership Group. Work with director of development to coordinate appropriate communications for donors and partners. Provide quality control to ensure that proposals and memos present the best ideas in the most compelling narrative. § Assist the vice president by drafting cover memos to the Pew Research Center board of directors describing the financial opportunity in support of existing work or a new initiative and requesting approval to move forward with the donor or partner. § Work with director of development and vice president to ensure that all proposals are properly vetted and approved at Pew Research Center and The Pew Charitable Trusts. Education/Training/Experience § A bachelor's degree is required; a Master's Degree is preferred. § Minimum of seven years of directly related professional experience with a documented record of success. § Experience supporting executive management or Board of Directors in an organization. § Experience in grant writing and administration. Knowledge and Skill Requirements § Persuasive written and oral communication skills; able to synthesize material and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue and how best to address it. § Strong interpersonal skills. A strong sense of diplomacy and instincts for organizational dynamics to manage complex relationships with internal and external partners tactfully and effectively. This includes the ability to listen, distill information, consult with and suggest new approaches to internal and external clients. Sound and seasoned judgment. § Ability to understand needs and priorities at Pew Research Center and The Pew Charitable Trusts and navigate effectively to ensure that all parties are fully informed. Ensure a high level of communications and collegiality. § Wide-ranging intellectual curiosity; ability to ask probing questions; excellent analytical skills; broad knowledge of contemporary trends and issues. Able to recognize opportunities, develop ideas and manage structures or models that transform these ideas into concrete initiatives. § Understanding of not-for-profit financial reporting and accounting processes along with the ability to analyze budgetary information and assess organizational capacity. § Resolves problems creatively and logically by detecting underlying issues in complex situations, identifying patterns or trends and applying one's expertise and experience. § Strong organizational skills including strong sense of urgency to set priorities, juggle multiple tasks, organize time effectively, conduct research, and identify resources for projects in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
