SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION INFORMATION HoustonWorks USA is pleased to announce the funding of educational scholarships for youth living in the Gulf Coast area. Applicants must be between 17 and 21 years of age. The scholarships will assist students with educational funding for attending local colleges, universities, apprenticeship programs and vocational training schools. The HoustonWorks USA Scholarships are merit-based educational grants. Applicants should possess a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 GPA scale. Applicants are encouraged to apply for more than one scholarship to increase their chances of being selected. Although applicants are encouraged to apply for multiple scholarships, only one scholarship will be awarded to each applicant. Applicants may be asked to attend an interview at the discretion of the HoustonWorks USA Scholarship Committee. HoustonWorks USA Scholarship Awards The HoustonWorks USA Scholarship Committee will consider the following factors when selecting scholarship recipients: Essay (grammar), Letters of Recommendation, Academic Achievement (AP programs), Community Service and Leadership Skills (character development), Focus and Commitment to a field of study, Ability to overcome adversity or obstacles and self-motivation. Through Youth Opportunity career centers, a summer jobs program, internship programs with local employers, scholarships and other innovative programs, Houston Works USA is committed to serving the youth of the Gulf Coast. 2 www.houstonworks.org HoustonWorks USA Scholarships: Mary Kay Merriman Scholarship Named after Mary Kay Merriman, this scholarship is awarded to a recipient who has chosen the field of education as a major, or is working towards a degree in teaching. A champion of education and a HoustonWorks USA Board Member, Mary Kay made her mark on the community as an advocate of social justice, expressed through activism in the Civil Rights and women’s movements. As an HISD teacher, spending much of her career at Travis Elementary, she retired in 2003. In honor of Mary Kay’s dedication and commitment to Houston’s youth through education, a scholarship is established in her name. T.W.Hudson Scholarship Named after T.W. Hudson, the HoustonWorks USA Executive Director from 1984 to 2007, this scholarship is awarded to a recipient in an apprenticeship or vocational training program. During his tenure, HoustonWorks USA inaugurated the first one-stop service delivery system in Texas, created a model program linking job training and welfare reform and received the Youth Opportunity grant designed to serve at-risk youth. In honor of Mr. Hudson’s dedication to the employment and training community and to the nation’s youth, a scholarship is established in his name. Schlumberger Scholarships As a science and technology company for more than 80 years, Schlumberger has adopted education as a key theme of their community outreach efforts. Recognizing the link between science, technology, and socio-economic development, as well as the key role of education in realizing individual potential, Schlumberger supports the HoustonWorks USA Scholarship program with two scholarships dedicated to recipients who have chosen science or engineering as a major. The HoustonWorks USA Scholarship This scholarship is established to award a son, daughter or grandchild of any employee working in a career office or facility operated by HoustonWorks USA. The HoustonWorks USA Scholarship is solely funded by the HoustonWorks USA employees. General Scholarships No less than four General Scholarships is awarded each year. The General Scholarships have no specific requirement beyond those outlined in the Application Process. All HoustonWorks USA Scholarships are merit-based educational grants. 3 www.houstonworks.org Scholarship Instructions Application Process Please complete the Scholarship Application in its entirety. All application packets must be submitted and received at the HoustonWorks USA Corporate Office on or before Noon, Friday February 17, 2012. All of the following materials must be submitted with the application in the same envelope: Completed and signed Scholarship Application packet. Essay (see requirements below) Current transcript that includes a cumulative grade point average. Letters of Recommendation Important Note: All awarded scholarship funds will be released directly to the applicant or the applicant’s designee after confirmation of their enrollment at certified institution of higher education and cost documentation to support enrollment (fee statement, tuition, book receipts). Essay Essay should address the following: Brief Personal Statement/autobiography Describe your academic achievements, awards and recognition Illustrate your ability to overcome adversity and drive/self-motivation Indicate any community service involvement, noting any leadership positions A detailed statement of intent describing your reasons for applying for the scholarship Your proposed field of study Your future career plans An explanation of how your plans support our mission at HoustonWorks USA (Please review the HoustonWorks USA website at www.houstonworks.org) Transcripts Please include a current transcript that includes a cumulative grade point average. Letters of Recommendation Applicants must provide three Letters of Recommendation to be submitted separately by the writers. Applicants must inform the person writing the Letters of Recommendation of its purpose. Make sure that the persons writing the letters addresses the following: Provides testimony to your aptitude, curiosity and industriousness Demonstrates your maturity and seriousness of purpose Speaks to your leadership ability Compliments your character Describes you as well rounded Include other pertinent information about you – things that are not readily apparent from test scores or transcripts. 4 www.houstonworks.org Each writer must include their name, address and a preferred method of contact (email or telephone) in case questions or follow-up information is required. The Letters of Recommendation may be submitted with the scholarship application as long as they are sealed by the writer.
