The Return of Lafayette Gilchrist & Co
Headliner: Lafayette Gilchrist is a Baltimore pianist that you may recognize as
a main composer of music for the HBO series "The Wire", but he is much more
than a famous TV composer. In his words: "I come from hip-hop culture. I'm
not a rapper. I'm not a DJ, I'm not a dancer. But I feed off of all that. All
of that's part of what I grew up in, what I grew up around." He also enjoyed
go-go as he was coming up - listening to Chuck Brown & his band practicing near
his aunt's home, often playing jazz standards in a different style. Lafayette
observed that "it taught me that you can combine funk grooves and jazz". And we
are all the better for it. Gilchrist will be performing with his ensemble for
this concert.
Opening for Lafayette will be Takoma Park's own Los Pollos Hermanos, disturbing
the peace with some Latin flavored jazz. The Hermanos are Alan Sherwin, sax,
Paul Rosenberg, piano, Ernest Bland, percussion, Danny Griffin, bass.
Please bring a folding chair. Parking in the driveway will be reserved for the
musicians. Nearest parking is on Baltimore or Takoma Ave. RSVPs appreciated!
