Come join the work day in Upper Portal Park! But "what is Upper Portal Park?"
you ask. It's the narrow triangle of land between Eastern, Takoma, and Piney
Branch. You might walk by it on the way to/from the Metro, or bring your dog
past. With core plantings of redbuds, viburnum, and crape myrtles along with
larger canopy trees, the inside is a small refuge and nice spot for a picnic.
It has some wonderful plantings, but it also doesn't get nearly enough
maintenance.

On the morning of June 12th, 9am-1pm, we're going to tackle some of the
maintenance backlog. The city gardeners will be there with some new shrubs and
perennials to plant, along with some mulch and their truck. There will be much
weeding, but also planting and replanting, pruning, mulching, and general
cleaning. You're encouraged to bring your own gloves and tools if you have them
- like dandelion poppers, hand cultivators, pruners, and shovels. Kids are
welcome too - the gardeners will bring some small spades for them.
We'd love to make the park a social connecting point for the neighborhood. In
the medium term we can also set up a "Little Free Nursery" for plant exchange.
There's already an excess of hellebores (lenten roses), liriope, daylilies, and
vinca minor (periwinkle) if you'd like to come thin them out a bit and take
some home.
