[north-takoma] Maryland on track to be the first state to publicy fund makerspaces

Makerspaces, as some of you might know, are creativity/social spaces where 
people gather together to tinker, build, socialize, learn from each other. 

I'm a member of the HacDC makerspace, located at St. Stephen and the 
Incarnation Episcopal Church, on 16th St NW, in DC.

Makerspaces had their origins in the 1990's with "hackerspaces" (a related 
concept) in Germany. The maker movement took off, here in the United States, 
with the launch of MAKE magazine in 2005. (I write for MAKE -- for their web 
site and their print publication.)

Makerspaces are well worth a family visit. Most of the time the people there 
are very welcoming. You do not need to be a member of a makerspace 
to visit one. Membership dues help to pay the rent and otherwise keep the 
makerspace running.
