Beginning this Sunday, October 17th, Historic Takoma, at 7328 Carroll
Avenue, will open its public Reading Room on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the
month from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. The Reading Room features Historic Takoma’s
reference collections, the Maryland reference collection (on loan from the
Takoma Park Maryland Library during renovation), newspapers like the Takoma
Voice, plus maps, local authors, and other materials. Volunteers will be on
hand to answer questions. The full archive will be open to the public in
2022. Anyone interested in accessing the full archives or desiring an
appointment for the Reading Room, may write to archives@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.
To visit the Historic Takoma, proof of vaccination is requested.
Historic Takoma was founded in 1979 to celebrate and preserve the history
of the Takoma community (both Maryland and Washington, DC). It owns its
storefront at 7328 Carroll Ave where the Reading Room and archives are
housed. The organization is staffed by volunteers dedicated to educating
the public about Takoma’s heritage and the value of historic preservation;
collecting, preserving, and sharing artifacts, maps, photographs, and
written history; and protecting the local architecture and physical
environment.
In addition to the Reading Room and archives, Historic Takoma sponsors the
annual House and Garden Tour, held annually on the first Sunday in May,
which showcases Takoma homes and history. In 2022, Historic Takoma plans to
resume the House and Garden Tour, lectures and other programs - watch the
website for details.
Historic Takoma is looking for volunteers. For information on becoming a
