Some time ago USPS posted a notice on the mailbox on Takoma at Piney Branch
that it had been tampered with and that mail should only be deposited just
before a scheduled pickup. I have read since then about checks being
stolen from boxes and altered for much larger amounts. And I still haven't
forgotten about an incompetent carrier in the past who dropped outgoing
mail in the street and misdelivered some of our outgoing mail to a neighbor
a few houses down the route. Despite the inconvenience, I now try to take
all outgoing mail to a post office.

The article below reminded me of my recent experience at Silver Spring P.O.
I put a VERY large check in the outdoor box. It never arrived.
I paid for a stop payment and it turned out ok -- not counting lots of
anxious phone calls.
BUT: When there recently to deposit mail in the *inside *mailbox a woman
told me that people (USPS or others -- unknown) have gotten keys to the
outside box.
Her friend had sent a check for $60 and it was changed to read $6,000 and
cashed. She said it took the woman 7+ months to get it sorted out.
So: Beware the outside boxes!
Yes, I know from experience, beware USPS in general -- but this is more
specific. Probably applies to TP PO as well.
