A 60 acre vegetable, fruit and Christmas tree farm
tucked away in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Needmore, PA,

2022 CSA SEASON
All pesticide-free vegetables and pesticide-free and IPM fruit are picked
the day before
Pick ups on Tuesdays at the evening Brookland Farmers Market and in Takoma
Park; Saturdays in Adams Morgan and Takoma Park
**The CSA season is divided into 4 sessions for one a week pickups:
1. June-July (Tuesday or Saturday)2. August-September (Tuesday or
Saturday)
3. October (Tuesday or Saturday)
4. November (Saturday only)
**Early Bird: (April 30 deadline)
$337.50 (9 week session); $300.00 (8 week session)
After April 30:

**PANDEMIC CONSIDERATIONS
Until the pandemic is behind us, we will continue to observe safety
precautions when picking up your CSA. Masks are at your discretion. But if
you are unvaccinated, please wear a mask.
**FARM VISIT DAY
Please join us, SUNDAY, MAY 22 for our traditional ANNUAL FARM VISIT DAY. So,
mark your calendars.
Come and meet each other, meet our amazing staff, tour the farm, see our
equipment, plant, harvest, plant seedlings or pick your Christmas tree,
share a veggie pot luck, swim in the creek, and enjoy a day in the
country. More details will come closer to the date. (If you really want to
pick your Christmas tree for next Christmas, bring a plastic luggage name
tag that can withstand any weather and tag your tree!) Hope to see you
then. And, we hope to have the UKULELE ORCHESTRA entertain us again this
year!
We will again offer a special CSA Subsidy for first responders and
essential service providers. We want to make sure folks can participate, so
consider contributing to the subsidy or please talk with us should you need
a reduced rate. We also encourage folks to consider spending some time
working on the farm (for a reduced rate if you choose).
And we’ll be inviting our CSA members to participate in some educational
and community-oriented events related to food security, family farm
support, climate change and agriculture. More on these later.

DETAILS ABOUT OUR CSA:
WHY A CSA
The intent of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is to partner with the
farmer by providing a cash flow to enable the farmer to purchase seeds,
hire staff, prepare equipment, plant, nurture and harvest. All of this
happens months before the farmer can begin to get income from the sale of
produce. The pre-purchase of membership gives the farmer a good sense of
how much of the yield is needed for the CSA, which is critical to a smooth
operation.
CSA produce is harvested the day before pick up. That means you are
assured the produce you get from us is as fresh as can be other than if you
went into the fields before starting to cook! And that is another thing to
understand about a CSA. Think of it as if you went into the field to find
out what’s for dinner! A CSA does not provide all your weekly food needs.
What it does is provide you with freshly harvested produce you can’t expect
from a grocery store. A CSA is seasonal and ebbs and flows with Mother
Nature.
A CSA IS A PARTNERSHIP
As a "partner", we experience together the ebbs and flows of the
season. Some weeks yield more than others, the weather plays a significant
role in the yield, and as the season progresses, produce grows at its own
pace. This is why some weeks there will be smaller yields and other weeks
abundance. We've found that the weeks balance out in relation to the
cost. By the end of the season, it had balanced itself out, so please be
patient and we'll do our best to keep you informed of the ebbs and flows.
If you are new to our CSA, please read some of the comments from our
members below.
HOW THE PANDEMIC HAS AFFECTED OUR FARM
For many years, our membership was between 60 – 70 shares. Since the
pandemic, we've been inundated with concerned folks asking to join our CSA,
especially after seeing the produce in the stores as the pandemic
worsened. We consulted with our staff and we all agreed we couldn’t “say
no” so our CSA expanded and we all share in the yield of the week. You can
imagine how much harder our staff worked last season!
So this season, we are preparing to grow as much as we can to accommodate
everyone who wants to become members. The optimal word is “share” so we
will all be sharing in the yield so many of us can have access to fresh,
pesticide-free produce each week. We want to stress again, that a CSA does
not provide all the produce a member would need in a week. What the CSA
does provide is produce picked the day before pick up and is
pesticide-free, from a farmer you know (and hopefully have visited the
farm!).
HOW OUR CSA WORKS
Session 1 CSA will start the first Saturday in June (June 4) and Tuesday
(June 7).
· The regular sessions are: June-July; August-September; October;
and November. November is only Saturday pick up, either at Adams Morgan or
Takoma Park. This is because our Tuesday markets end at the end of October.
· You can sign up for the entire season or by session. Either way,
you need to pay before the session begins. So, we encourage you to plan
accordingly. Early bird prices apply for the whole season.
· You will get a reminder about two weeks before the beginning of
each session, so you should have plenty of time to get your payment to us.

With heavy heart, we are raising our prices, by only a few dollars (by
$2.50/week). Our prices were steady for the last 6 years. However, costs
have risen across the board on seeds, equipment, fuel, and most
importantly, we've doubled staff salaries. Above all, we value our staff
and all the incredibly hard work they do in the heat and the many hours
they work to provide our beloved customers with quality produce.
As listed above, depending on how many pickups in each session (either 8
or 9) the breakdown for early bird is $37.50/week and full price comes to
$40.00/week.

to the address on the form. Make out the check to: Michael Tabor.
2. If you plan to pay electronically, email back your Membership Form
using a simple Word document. Anything else will be a problem for us to
open. The form is in Word, so fill it in, save it in the Word doc it
already is in and email it back – and indicate which payment method on the
form.
RAVENHOOK BAKEHOUSE
We will again offer, for an extra cost ($6) "baker's choice" weekly
loaves. Let us know if you want to add the bread. If you want to do less
than weekly, please indicate which weeks you want to pick up and prorate

Early Bird
If you start off with an early bird price, we will honor that throughout
the season as long as we get your payment before each session begins. If
not, then the regular price will apply for that session.
Pro-rating
If you know before you pay each session that you won't be picking up on
particular dates, pro-rate your amount and make sure you write on your form
the dates you will not pick up. That is essential for our weekly counts.
Credit
We do not give cash refunds. As is our practice, if you let us know in
enough time you will not be picking up that week, we will give you credit
towards the next session. Enough time means, before 7:00pm Thursday for
Saturday pickups and before 7:00pm Sunday, for Tuesday pick ups.
If you just forget to pick one week, we donate your share to a good
cause. Obviously, emergency situations are different so please let us know
and we will make adjustments. The best reason (our favorite!) we've had for
not picking up was, "I'm so sorry, I went into labor Saturday morning". And
we do allow, for good reasons, Sunday pick ups or Wednesday pickups when we
can, but, please, not as a regular thing.
Below are explanations of how we work and disclosures so hopefully, there
won’t be confusion during the season about credit, pickup hours and details
for the individual market pickups, etc. We try to be as flexible as
possible, understanding we all have crazy lives and schedules.
How we operate weekly
To understand why we need to know the numbers each week, here is how we
operate.
· We call the farm the day before each pick up. So, we call in early
Friday morning (before 7:00am) for our Saturday CSA and early Monday
morning for Tuesday CSA. The staff first pick for the CSA. Then the staff
picks for our markets and wholesale. So, if we don't have the correct
number, we either don't have enough for the CSA, or we have extra that
could have been used at our markets for sale. That is why it is so
important we have the correct number.
Pick up hours
We encourage you to try to pick up as soon as possible. We keep what we
can in water or on ice, and we mist with water, but the sooner you can get
your produce in the refrig the better it will keep for the week, especially
during the heat of the summer.
If you need to be late, please let us know (for market pickups, we can't
stay longer than it takes us to pack up). And for Takoma Park pickups,
PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO TAKE YOUR NAME TAG SO WE KNOW YOU HAVE PICKED UP.
