Hello, neighbors!
Yesterday’s picnic was a blast! So nice to see so many new families in
the neighborhood, with so many kids! It was a joy for us longtime
residents (henceforward known as the “legacy neighbors”) to behold.
I just had a long conversation with Santo, the sousaphone player and
bandleader of Crushfunk, and he thanked *us! *He said the band members
all felt great about seeing a community come together. “That’s what we
live for,” he told me.
I thanked him for the after-concert interaction with the kids, and he said
that several members of the groups (himself, the drummer, and the
trumpeter) are teachers who haven’t been in the classroom during the
pandemic and have been starved for time face-to-face with kids, doing what
they love best.
(I had told some people that the band consisted of students from UDC,
Howard, and Bowie State. It turns out that’s the band’s origin story. The
original members met while in school, but they’re all out in the working
world now.)
So thanks to everyone who came, who brought delicious food and who helped
with the set-up. I’d like to give a special shout-out to Joav and Eli, who
totally took over as grillmasters. Thanks to them, I actually got to talk
to people and sit down during the picnic. A new and delightful experience!
I’d love to thank everyone individually who chipped in for the band, but I
lost track of all the people thrusting money in my hands. We covered their
fee comfortably. Anyone who put money in their bucket added a generous tip.
So, good going, neighbors. Our social skills may have gotten rusty in the
past fourteen months, but they came back strong for Memorial Day!
