Hi Diane
The term “new engine” is somewhat ambiguous depending on how much of the
machinery needs replacement, if a rebuilt engine block is available, and the
availability of the other parts. An actual OEM replacement (including labor)
with some kind of warranty could be more than what he paid for the car. These
kinds of jobs are often done by flippers who will rebuild and then resell. I
did some of this when I was in college and things haven’t changed much although
the control systems are beyond my mechanical abilities. So I would be very
careful here, making sure you know exactly what you are getting. Not surprised
if some mechanics don’t want to handle it
BTW l use Murray’s in SS to take care of my Lexus which is a lot older than the
car you’re talking about. You could try them

Do you have someone who you would trust to do this work? Or explain kindly
that it’s a bad idea?
I welcome your thoughts and advice.
