BIRD WALK MAY 13 AT CHILTON WOODS STATE FOREST
On Monday, May 13, the Northern Neck Audubon Society will conduct a bird walk
at 9:00 a.m. at Chilton Woods State Forest. Located in Lancaster, County,
Chilton Woods is part of the Rappahannock River watershed with streams emptying
into Lancaster Creek and the Corrotoman River. The forest consists mostly of
loblolly pine with areas of mixed pine and hardwood. Native wildflowers, the
showy orchis (Galearis spectabilis) and the Pink Lady’s Slipper (Cypripedium
acaule Aiton) may be seen here.
This is prime time for migrating birds, especially warblers. Among possible
sightings are black-and-white, Northern Parula, Chestnut-sided, pine, and
yellow-throated warblers, scarlet and summer tanagers, yellow-billed cuckoos,
wild turkeys, northern Bobwhite quail, red-headed, downy, and pileated
woodpeckers, Acadian flycatchers, brown thrashers, and Eastern wood-pewees.
Meet at 9:00 a.m. in the parking lot under the power line right of way off of
Field Trial Road.
From Kilmarnock, take Route 3 West to Lively. Continue on Route 3
approximately 1 ½ mile and turn right onto Route 617 (Alphonso Road). Go 1 ¼
mile and turn left onto Route 600 (Lara Road). Go 1 ½ mile and turn left onto
Route 602 (Field Trial Road). Meet at the first parking lot on the left under
the power line right of way.
From Heathsville, take Route 201 South approximately 5 ½ miles. At Miskimon,
turn right onto Route 602 (Miskimon Road). Go to the end. Turn left onto
Route 600 (Lara Road). Make the next right onto Route 602 (Field Trial Road).
Meet at the first parking lot on the left under the power line right of way.
From Warsaw, take Route 3 East approximately 12 miles to Robley. Go
approximately 2 miles farther and turn left onto Route 602 (Field Trial Road.)
Meet at the second parking lot on the right under the power line right of way.
