We have received an invitation to join the new Mid-Pen Bird Club on their first
walk on Saturday, January 12 at 8:00 a.m. This property is on the south bank
of the Piankatank River on both sides of Holland Point.Simplified directions
from Kilmarnock & Saluda/Deltaville: Take Route 3 and cross the Twigg's Ferry
Bridge. At the intersection of Routes 3 & 198, turn right onto Buckley Hall
Road. Go 1.9 miles (Staying on Route 198). Turn Right onto Holland Point
Road. Continue all the way down Holland Point Road....meet at the barn which
is 1/2 mile past Wading Creek Road. See below for more details.
The first Mid-Pen bird walk 2013 will be Jan 12, at the home of Pat and
Elizabeth Roane on the Piankatank River. Grab your waterproof shoes, warm coat,
warm gloves a warm hat, binoculars and meet at 8AM at the horse barn. We will
walk out to the high river bank and scan the river and sky for birds - you may
approach the edge but be very careful as the cliff is undercut and could fall
away – I grabbed a sapling well aware that if the bank gave way the sapling
would go too! Next we will walk down a ravine to the dock. Off the short dock
there is about 15ft of deep water but close by on either side are sandy beaches
– I was fascinated…not the usual Mathews/Gloucester waterfront. Again we will
scan for birds. Back at the barn we can go into the woods and look for birds in
this wetland area. There is a an immature red-headed woodpecker hanging out at
the barn… For those that don’t want the adventure of cliffs and deep water the
area around the barn is easy terrain with hedgerows and lots of LBB – if you
are struggling with sparrows this is a good place to spend time. We will be
watching for owls, hawks, eagles, sparrows, gulls, terns, woodpeckers, tweety
birds, eastern phoebe, thrasher, hermit thrush, buffleheads, loons and other
ducks, etc. Several experienced birders are planning to attend the bird walk
and will help with ID. No experience needed to help spot birds!Late morning we
are invited for hot chocolate at the Roane’s new house. If you need the loo
before that please speak to Elizabeth or me.For those coming from afar both
Mathews and Gloucester Courthouses are fun to visit or get a late lunch, visit
shops or continue birding (Bethel Beach, Beaverdam).Directions:From
Gloucester:Rt 14E to Mathews L on Rt 3L L Buckley Hall Rd/VA-198.
Just after the turn there is a Farm Bureau office on the right. Recommend
backing off the accelerator....the road will bend to the left and Holland Point
Road comes up quickly on the right.
A white farmhouse comes up on the right, surrounded by tall trees. The white
farmhouse marks the right turn to Holland Point Road. The road sign for
Holland Point is hidden by these trees until very close...again, recommend
slowing down.
Turn right onto Holland Point Rd.
Holland Point Rd is 0.1 miles past Ewellville LnIf you reach the Gloucester
County line you've gone too farContinue all the way down Holland Point
Road...pass Wading Creek Road on the right and keep going. The paved road will
turn to a dirt road. Our barn is 1/2 mile past Wading Creek RdPlease limit speed
to 15 MPH coming down the dirt road. The barn and pastures will appear on the
left...follow the dirt road to the left and head toward the barn. Park
anywhere along the road, in the grassy field, or near the barn. For those that
trust the internet, enter "1071 Holland Point Road, Dutton, VA" into MapQuest
and it will provide a picture and directions from any starting point (Google
maps doesn't show the precise location).Felicity cell 804 815 1718 (will be
