Subject: [nnasnet] Number 250
Today I recorded number 250 on my life list. A Brown Creeper, unremarkable
discovery on the northern neck, but nevertheless a milestone bird for me.
However, the sighting was extraordinary. While looking at details for a minute
or so and ruling out the possible culprits, not a Brown Headed Nuthatch, not a
White Breasted Nuthatch, not a Red Breasted Nuthatch, not even a Black and
White Warbler. While all this is going through my head, I grab my book and
open to the nuthatch page and BANG!
A blue jay crashers through the tree next to me with two extended talons
closely following. Not sure if it was the Cooper's Hawk I seen earlier or
perhaps the Sharpy from the day before.
The remarkable part to me was when the Blue Jay flew away, he did one great
impression of a Red Shouldered Hawk. I almost recorded one just because it was
that good.
Reminded me of this summer at Christ Church when a blue jay was mimicking a
hawk and then find out there was also a Red Shoulder Hawk there as well.
