Hi Beth,
Will be curious to see other comments but think this might be the beginning of
a house sparrow (invasive undesirable species) nest as they will use many
feathers during construction. They also extend their nest material to the top
of the box filling it while creating a tunnel to the actual nest. If this is a
HS nest we have successfully eliminated many from our area with the
encouragement of Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The aggressive HS males will peck
a sitting BB on its head to death Their eggs are small, lightly tinted
greenish with many dark spots. Bluebird nests are neatly constructed from soft
grasses and their eggs are a beautiful colored blue. Best advice is watch the
box closely to be sure it's a HS. As you can likely tell we have no love for
the HS, M or F.
You mentioned wren - we have Carolina wrens trying to nest in funny places like
our screened in porch but to no avail. We welcome them and hear their song
though. Unfortunately we have had house wrens filling every BB box with short
sticks - as fast as we empty them they fill them again. We have won most of
those battles!
