HUGHLETT POINT & DAMERON MARSH BIRD WALK MARCH 11 On Monday, March 11, the Northern Neck Audubon Society will conduct a bird walk at Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve and Dameron Marsh in Northumberland County. Hughlett Point is a diverse preserve that lies on a peninsula jutting into the Chesapeake Bay and offers a wonderful opportunity for viewing birds and wildlife as it includes coastal forest, shrub, salt marsh, and sandy beach habitats and a viewing platform. This is prime time for viewing waterfowl. Among possible sightings are scaups, old squaws, canvas backs, loons, horned grebes, golden eyes. surf scoters, gannets, wigeons, tundra swans, ruddy ducks, buffleheads, mergansers, gulls, terns and bald eagles. With the warm weather, there may also be some early migrants. Carpools will leave Grace Episcopal Church in Kilmarnock at 12:30 p.m. Those driving directly should meet at Hughlett Point parking lot at 1:00 p.m. To reach Hughlett Point from Burgess, take Rt. 200 south. Go approximately 8 miles and turn left (east) on Shiloh School Road (Rt. 606). At the end of Shiloh School Road, turn right onto Balls Neck Road (Rt. 605). Go approximately a mile and a half. The entrance to Hughlett Point and the parking lot will be on your left. To reach Hughlett Point from Kilmarnock, take Rt. 200 north. Go approximately 5 miles and turn right (east) on Shiloh School Road (Rt. 606). At the end of Shiloh School Road, turn right onto Balls Neck Road (Rt. 605). Go approximately a mile and a half.
