Greetings:
On Monday, May 2, 2016, the Northern Neck Chapter of the Audubon Society will
present the program: Teachers on the Bay at 3:15 PM, at Grace Episcopal Church,
Kilmarnock.
In 1989, Bill Portlock launched “Teachers on the Bay” with this organizing
statement: “The Chesapeake Bay is a natural resource that needs a knowledgeable
and caring public to restore its health and manage it wisely.” This
environmental course for teachers continues today and is in its 28th
consecutive year.
On May 2, 2016, Portlock will be presenting a program for the Northern Neck
Audubon chapter on the history and impact of the Teachers on the Bay program.
Joining him will be Aylett Country Day School teachers Latane Dillardand
Stephanie Dahlehm,
both recent Teachers on the Bay participants, and two of their middle school
students. (Latine Dillard is in the yellow t-shirt green visor in the photo at
left. Stephanie Dahlehm is the blonde woman in blue t-shirt, pointing in the
photo at right.) Throughout this year the entire middle school faculty has
worked to incorporate Save the Bay efforts across the academic spectrum so that
they can create a culture of concerned citizens and stewards of the Bay. Come
see if you know as much about the environment of the Bay as the (above)-average
middle school student!
Portlock has spent his life working in natural resources conservation,
education and research. He is Director of Teachers on the Bay and Senior
Educator for the Bay with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. He joined the
Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) in 1981 as Virginia Field Director and began
CBF’s Environmental Education Program in Virginia. He regularly monitors the
Bay and its rivers as a water quality and living resources specialist while
documenting the Bay and its watershed photographically.
Portlock says, “As citizens, we have a responsibility to provide future
generations with the knowledge, skills, and motivation needed to make informed
environmental decisions that are certain to be part of their future.”
The Northern Neck Audubon Society has generously supported Teachers on the Bay
for many years through program support and teacher scholarships.
The Northern Neck Audubon meetings begin at 3:15 PM, with refreshments and
social activities. The presentation begins at 3:30 PM. The public is invited
to join the Northern Neck Audubon chapter on May 2, at Grace Episcopal Church,
303 S. Main Street, Kilmarnock.
