Friday February 18 - Bethel Beach and New Point Comfort, Mathews County
Mark Sopko, and others, will be leading this winter waterfowl/shorebird
identification walk. The walk will begin at 8 am at Bethel Beach Natural Area
Preserve and will last for about 2 hours. We will then drive to New Point
Comfort Natural Area Preserve. Large flocks of migratory winter waterfowl are
still being seen in both locations.
The New Point Comfort Observation Walkway is accessible to those with limited
mobility.
Directions: To reach Bethel Beach from Mathews Court House, turn left from
Route 14 (Main Street) onto Route 611 (Tabernacle Road). Follow the road for
4.3 miles then turn left onto Route 609 (Bethel Beach Road) which ends in about
2 miles at the beach. After we finish at Bethel Beach, we will drive to visit
New Point Comfort Natural Area Preserve (15-20 minutes).
Both of these locations are on the Chesapeake Bay: Be prepared for possible
cold and windy weather!
Any cancellations due to weather will be posted on the Club’s Facebook page.
Sunday February 20 - Private Properties in King & Queen County
The Middle Peninsula Bird Club has been invited to three private properties in
King and Queen County for a special Great Backyard Bird Count outing on Sunday
February 20 beginning at 8:00 am. The first property has 16 acres bordering the
Dragon Run Swamp and features varied habitat for birdwatching. The second
property has paths through the woods and overlooks a creek. The third property
has access to the York River downriver from West Point. We plan to spend about
1.5 - 2 hours at each property. These properties are not accessible to those
with limited mobility.
After February 6th, for addresses/directions: email
scrocket@xxxxxxx<mailto:scrocket@xxxxxxx> or call Susan Crockett at
804-832-1839.
Any cancellations due to weather will be posted on the Club’s Facebook page.
Plan to count birds in your own backyard anytime during the GBBC weekend.
Participation is simple: For at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the
count, tally the numbers and kinds of birds you see and enter online. This is a
joint citizen science project supported by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and
the National Audubon Society since 1998.
