This Tree Talk highlights Quercus montana, chestnut oak. It is a wonderful
species that plays an important role in the canopy of ridgetop forests, where
most other species cannot thrive in the thin, rocky soils. Chestnut oak is
relished by wildlife and foresters alike, but like many other oaks, chestnut
oak regeneration is scarce in forests that have been managed poorly and/or have
overabundances of deer. Watch this month's Tree Talk to learn more!

December Trivia Reveal (pictured on the left)
Princess Tree, Paulownia tomentosa, is an invasive species that was brought to
Europe from East Asia in the 1830s by the Dutch East India Company and soon
after was brought to North America. Historically, the wood was highly valued in
Japan where it was used to make wooden chests and other wooden articles.
Princess tree grows extremely quickly and has prolific seed production, making
it a highly problematic invasive plant in the Chesapeake region. Each seed pod,
like the featured photo, can contain up to 2000 seeds; in fact, one tree is
capable of producing 20 million seeds a season! Similarly to another
problematic invasive tree, tree-of-heaven, princess tree can spread via root
sprouts; improperly cutting one down without herbicide application can lead to
an eruption of many more trees growing back from the roots. This tree can start
seed production within 8-10 years and generally lives to be about 70 years old.
The most common species that princess tree can be confused with here is our
native catalpa, Catalpa speciosa. These two trees can be distinguished by
looking at the leaf placement around the stem; catalpa has a whorled leaf
structure while princess tree’s leaves are opposite. Princess tree also has a
hollow or chambered pith inside of the twigs while the catalpa’s is solid.
