For every tree lost in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, more nutrient and sediment
pollution flows through the streams and rivers that lead to this unique
estuary. Because conserving our existing forests and encouraging new tree
plantings are crucial to the economic and environmental health of the
Chesapeake Bay watershed, the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and the U.S.
Forest Service recognize individuals who are committed to the mission of forest
conservation and reforestation every year. Three Chesapeake Forest Champions
were recognized at the recent Chesapeake Watershed Forum in Shepherdstown, West
Virginia.

Tree Talk: Christmas Fern

This time on Tree Talk we delve into Christmas Fern, Polystichum
acrostichoides, a common fern that garnishes our forest floors through the
winter months. Beyond learning about this jolly little plant, we discuss fern
reproduction, which is more complicated than you may think!

The web pictured in October’s newsletter was created by the fall webworm
(Hyphantria cunea). Native to North America, the fall webworm larvae are a
common defoliator across the Chesapeake Bay watershed. They hatch and then
immediately begin spinning their silken web around foliage, enclosing more
vegetation as they themselves grow.

The fall webworm is easily confused with the tent caterpillar (Malacosoma
americanum). The fall webworm’s web is loosely knit over the ends of branches;
the tent caterpillar’s web is densely woven, fit within the forks and crotches
of trees. You’ll find fall webworm larvae in the summer and fall, and tent
caterpillar larvae in the spring.
