E-STEM for summer adventures

By Nancy Stalik, FOR Environmental Educator
Each week of camp features a morning where campers learn about renewable
natural resources. They learn about the long history of hydropower in its many
forms, from simple waterwheels in small rivers to sophisticated turbines in
massive dams. Our environmental educators have developed an E-STEM challenge
that gives campers a sip of the history of the waterwheel then provides them
with the design challenge to create a working waterwheel.

[LowStory]

Kids solving stormwater issues with hands-on project
By Lowery Pemberton, FOR Education Coordinator
This year, sixth graders at Montross Middle School in Westmoreland County
joined our crew of NOAA BWET participants and man did we have fun! The students
scalped away the grass, graded the slope, built rock walls and planted native
grasses and flowers to create their very own bioswale. When they realized the
impact on water quality, the students decided to try to slow the water down by
soaking some of it up as it comes off of the bus loop in front of their school.

[Fones-Cliffs-Sen-Warner-2016]Fones Cliffs property dedicated to
Rappahannock Indians

In mid-June a group of conservation ‘All Stars’ met in Richmond County to
dedicate some property near Fones Cliffs to the Rappahannock Indians for their
‘Return to the River’ Program.

Clean Water Rule threatened

The 2015 Clean Water Rule outlined which bodies of water would be automatically
protected by the Clean Water Act. Large bodies like lakes and rivers were
listed, but the rule also included streams, ponds and other, smaller features
that have important effects on these bigger, “navigable” waterways.
