It was a chilly start for the nine members and guests at 8:15 AM on Monday, 11/10/14, with temperatures in the mid 40's, but it warmed up rather nicely by the end of our walk. We got up to a total of 27 species with the following highlights: a gorgeous Merlin perched up in a tree and through our leader Frank Shaff and Lance Johnsen's scopes, gave us long looks right at the beginning of the walk, which delighted us all. Several Meadowlarks were seen and another special sighting was a Northern Harrier. Here is the rest of the list in order of viewing: Canada Goose, American Crow, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Northern Flicker, American Robin, Savannah Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow, American Goldfinch, Northern Mockingbird, Song Sparrow, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Northern Cardinal, Blue Jay, Downey Woodpecker, Black Vulture, Carolina Chickadee, Hermit Thrush, White-throated Sparrow, Carolina Wren, Common Grackle, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Red-tailed Hawk, Turkey Vulture, and a Bald Eagle. A stop at the bridge returning after lunch brought Lance and I four more species: Double-crested Cormorant, Great Black-backed Gull, Laughing Gull and European Starlings. Five of us were able to go for lunch and we decided on Appleby's in Tappahannock. With the reports of the Artic Air coming our way, it was great to be out in the beautiful sunshine and 62 degrees at the end of the Birdwalk. Happy birding, Maryalyce J.
