Rappahannock Record - June 21,2012 On Friday, June 29, at 2 p.m. a remembrance gathering will be held at Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock for B. J. Norris of White Stone, who died April 9, 2012. A reception will follow at Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club. B. J.'s friends are invited to both occasions. B. J. Norris served as NNAS President in 1997- 1998. She was a master birder and was often called on by many of us for her expertise. B. J. was always willing to share her knowledge and never made us novices feel like we were imposing. The establishment of Hickory Hollow, Hughlett Point and Dameron Marsh Natural Areas were among the many projects that B. J. worked on for the benefit of all who live in the Northern Neck of Virginia. B. J. will be greatly missed by her friends from Northern Neck Audubon Society. Beverly Jean "B.J." Buzzard Norris, 77, of White Stone died on April 9, 2012. She was born on November 19, 1934, daughter of the late Gertrude Simons Buzzard and Clyde Ernest Buzzard, on the family farm outside of Neosho, Missouri. Her early schooling was at the two-room Belfast Community School. Later she attended Neosho High School and the University were she graduated with an AB in Personnel Psychology. After graduating, she joined AT&T's Management Development Program and had jobs in Chicago, Denver and St. Louis before becoming Employment Supervisor for AT&T Long Lines Midwestern Area in Kansas City. She and her husband, Tom were married in the summer of 1970 and they moved to Dallas shortly after where she joined General Telephone of the Southwest as Employment Manager and subsequently General Personnel Manager. In 1976, Tom's transfer to New Jersey took her to the East Coast. As they were house hunting, they happened on Princeton, N.J. where BJ immediately decided she wanted to live. So, characteristically, she took the job of Department Manager of Princeton University's Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering where she worked until 1985. While in Princeton, the birth mother of Tom's two sons died and BJ adopted them as young teenagers. Her retirement from the University lasted a few months until she was engaged as a consultant to form the structure and budget of the University's Biochemistry Department, a job she maintained until after moving to Washington, D. C. in 1987, again following Tom's job. Living on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. was fun but hectic and BJ found their weekend retreat on Mosquito Point in 1992. It soon became a weekend retreat for Tom but pretty much full time for BJ. In 1995, Tom left AT&T and joined her on the River. BJ discovered bird-watching in Texas and was active in New Jersey Audubon, especially Cape May Bird Observatory. She joined Northern Neck Audubon soon after establishing herself in Virginia. As President of Audubon, she was instrumental in establishing Hickory Hollow, Hughlett Point and Dameron Marsh Natural Areas. The eldest of five children, she is survived by her brother Clyde and sisters, Shirley, Karen and Sharon. She is also survived by her husband, Tom Norris; son, Trent and his partner, Jack Calhoun of San Francisco and her son, Troy and his partner, Ewa Hart of Boston and three grandchildren, Jacqueline 14, Tyler 12 and Jason 10. Remembrance services will be held in the summer. Memorials may be made to the Animal Welfare League, P. O. Box 975, White Stone 22578.
