Westmoreland Berry Farm / Voorhees Bird Walk Saturday, June 24
Are you looking for a fun outing in the Northern Neck? On Saturday, June 24,
Paula Boundy of the Northern Neck Audubon Society will lead a bird walk on the
Westmoreland Berry Farm / Voorhees Nature Preserve segment of the Virginia
Birding and Wildlife Trail. From the VDGIF website: “The preserve has trails
through deciduous forest, boardwalks that cross open wetlands, and spectacular
vistas from bluffs overlooking the Rappahannock River. A trail crosses a
500-foot boardwalk that spans a freshwater meadow. A small stream flows under
the boardwalk. Beautiful wildflowers are often in bloom near the stream. The
trail continues along the Rappahannock River, offering stunning views from a
100-foot sand bluff. The path also runs by a record-size American beech tree.”
The bird walk will be on both level and steep terrain. It will cross the
boardwalk that spans Owl Hollow Creek and will continue to two overlooks that
present exceptional views from the cliffs overlooking the Rappahannock River.
Possible sightings on this walk are Bald Eagles, Scarlet Tanagers, Hooded and
Prothonotary Warblers, Great Crested, Acadian, and Eastern Flycatchers,
Northern Parulas, Red-winged Blackbirds, Belted Kingfishers, Yellow-billed
Cuckoos, Red-eyed Vireos, and Wood Thrushes,
After the bird walk, you may want to shop in the farm store, see the goats,
have lunch in Twinkle’s Café, and depending on what’s in season, pick your own
berries. Check out their website: westmorelandberryfarm.com.
Meet at 9:00 am at the Westmoreland Farm Berry Store at 1235 Berry Farm Lane,
Colonial Beach, VA 22443. The Berry Farm is about an hour and twenty minutes
from Kilmarnock and 50 minutes from Tappahannock. Several pairs of loaner
